Reddit has long been one of the websites ChatGPT turns to for information. But something has changed.
New data from PromptWatch shows that Reddit citations in ChatGPT have dropped by 86.4% in a matter of weeks.
Between July 18 and August 7, Reddit appeared in about 3.83% of ChatGPT citations. By August 14–17, that number had fallen to just 0.52%.
That is a huge drop.
So, why is ChatGPT citing Reddit much less than before?
The answer is not completely clear yet. But PromptWatch found another major change around the same time.
On August 8, ChatGPT suddenly started using far more “site:” searches. These searches tell Google to look for results from a specific website. Their use jumped from just 0.37% to 16.8% of ChatGPT’s background searches.
ChatGPT also started making more searches before answering. The average went from about 1.08 searches to 1.83 searches per response.
In other words, ChatGPT appears to have changed the way it looks for information online.
However, that does not mean OpenAI simply blocked Reddit.
This is where the story needs some caution. PromptWatch found a clear change in Reddit’s citation numbers, but the data does not prove exactly what caused it.
OpenAI has said it does not set a fixed visibility level for individual websites and that ChatGPT still cites Reddit.
There is another interesting part of the story. Reddit has not seen the same sudden fall in Google’s AI search features. Its visibility there has changed, but the drop is much smaller.
What Does This Mean for Marketers?
This is a good reminder that getting mentioned by AI is not permanent.
A website can be frequently cited by ChatGPT today and see those citations fall sharply after a change in how the AI searches for information.
For businesses working on GEO and AI search optimization, relying on one platform or one source is risky.
Reddit has not disappeared from ChatGPT. But its sudden drop shows just how quickly AI search is changing, and how important it is for brands to build visibility across different trusted sources.
