Google’s Answer to Zero-Click Search? New Article Carousels in AI Mode!

Google is changing its AI Mode search to help publishers.

They added link carousels for changing news topics. This means you will see a row of links to news articles inside the AI answer. This happens for breaking news and fast-moving stories. It helps users find the latest information quickly. It can also send more clicks to news websites.

When and Where Was It Announced?

On August 25, 2026, Robby Stein, the Vice President of Product for Google Search, announced on X that new link carousels are live in AI Mode to help users track breaking news.

Instead of just showing text, Google will now also display a horizontal row of link cards inside the AI response. Each card includes a picture, headline, website name, and date, making it easier for users to click and read the original stories.

This update aims to reduce zero-click searches. Since AI answers often satisfy users directly on the search page, websites lose traffic; these new visual cards encourage people to visit the sources.

A More Visible Place for Publisher Content

This new feature is for developing topics where users want to read more than just a quick AI summary. If you search for breaking news, you will see links to different articles from many news websites. This lets you read the full stories and see different viewpoints.

For news websites, this means their articles get much better visibility inside the AI search. Instead of being hidden in tiny links, their stories will stand out in a big row.

Websites cannot use special tech tricks or SEO hacks to get into these rows. Google does not have a separate ranking system for this. The only way to get featured is to write trustworthy, original, and timely news that helps people.

Link Carousels for Developing Topics

What This Means for SEO

This update shows a major shift in how people find information online, proving that search success is no longer just about ranking in the traditional list of blue links. Instead, websites can now gain visibility across various Google features like AI summaries, videos, and these new horizontal link carousels.

This creates a powerful new opportunity for specific types of content, including:

• Breaking news and first-hand reporting
• Expert opinions on big industry changes
• Trending topics and fast-moving stories
• New data and original research
• Regular updates on changing events

Ultimately, the biggest advantages under this new system are speed and originality. When a major story breaks, dozens of websites quickly copy and repeat the same information.

Google’s new system aims to bypass the copycats, meaning that publishers who deliver truly unique reporting, first-hand research, or fresh expert insights will have the best chance to stand out and win clicks.

Is This a Big Win for Publishers?

It is too early to say if this feature will solve the AI traffic problem for websites. While the carousels make it easier to discover articles, they will not show up for every single news search. Also, Google doesn’t yet give websites a specific tool to track clicks from these exact link rows.

Even though Google AI Mode summarizes a story first, it now provides clear pathways by giving users a prominent path to visit sources. Because Google is mixing AI-generated answers with web links, the value of quality content is rising, making timely, unique, and trustworthy writing more important than ever.

To help navigate this shifting landscape, the DigitalGuider will continue tracking these changes to share exactly what they mean for SEO, publishers, and businesses adapting to AI search.
