Google has introduced a new experimental feature called “AI Mode” in Search, designed to enhance users’ exploration of complex topics. This feature, powered by a custom version of Gemini 2.0, allows users to ask detailed, multi-part questions and follow up for deeper insights, similar to services like Perplexity AI and ChatGPT Search.
AI Mode is available through Search Labs for Google One AI Premium subscribers. It uses an advanced “query fan-out” technique, pulling data from multiple sources, including Google’s Knowledge Graph and real-time web content, to generate accurate and easy-to-understand responses.
This feature allows users to compare detailed information, such as sleep-tracking features across different devices or ask follow-up questions for continuous exploration. Google emphasizes that the model prioritizes factuality and transparency, providing direct links to sources when necessary.
In addition to AI Mode, Google is upgrading AI Overviews with Gemini 2.0 to handle complex queries like coding and advanced math. The feature no longer requires sign-in and is now available to teen users.
As an early experiment, this will continue evolving, with Google planning to enhance visuals and integrate more diverse content sources. Users can access the feature via Search Labs or directly at google.com/aimode.
